چکیده

We show that strongly coupled field theories with holographic gravity duals at finite charge density and low temperatures can undergo de Haas van Alphen quantum oscillations as a function of an external magnetic field. Exhibiting this effect requires computation of the one loop contribution of charged bulk fermions to the free energy. The one loop calculation is performed using a formula expressing determinants in black hole backgrounds as sums over quasinormal modes. At zero temperature, the periodic nonanalyticities in the magnetic susceptibility as a function of the inverse magnetic field depend on the low energy scaling behavior of fermionic operators in the field theory, and are found to be softer than in weakly coupled theories. We also obtain numerical and WKB results for the quasinormal modes of charged bosons in dyonic black hole backgrounds, finding evidence for nontrivial periodic behavior as a function of the magnetic field. ar X iv :0 90 8. 17 88 v2 [ he pth ] 2 5 A ug 2 00 9

Revisiting Event Horizon Finders

Event horizons are the defining physical features of black hole spacetimes, and are of considerable interest in studying black hole dynamics. Here, we reconsider three techniques to localise event horizons in numerical spacetimes: integrating geodesics, integrating a surface, and integrating a levelset of surfaces over a volume. We implement the first two techniques and find that straightforwar...

Influence of the back reaction of the Hawking radiation upon black hole quasinormal modes

We consider the BTZ black hole surrounded by the conformal scalar field. Within general relativity, the resonant quasinormal (QN) modes dominate in the response of a black hole to external perturbations. At the same time, the metric of an evaporating black hole is affected by the Hawking radiation. We estimate the shift in the quasinormal spectrum of the BTZ black hole stipulated by the back re...

Wormholes as Black Hole Foils

We study to what extent wormholes can mimic the observational features of black holes. It is surprisingly found that many features that could be thought of as “characteristic” of a black hole (endowed with an event horizon) can be closely mimicked by a globally static wormhole, having no event horizon. This is the case for: the apparently irreversible accretion of matter down a hole, no-hair pr...

Linear perturbations of black holes : stability , quasi - normal modes and tails

Black holes have their proper oscillations, which are called the quasi-normal modes. The proper oscillations of astrophysical black holes can be observed in the nearest future with the help of gravitational wave detectors. Quasi-normal modes are also very important in the context of testing of the stability of black objects, the anti-de Sitter/Conformal Field Theory (AdS/CFT) correspondence and...
